Terminology:

Skimming: If you want a wall or ceiling without any lumps, bumps, or cracks in it, then this is what you need to do.  We apply two coats of skim coat plaster which we work to get a smooth surface ready for painting. This method takes more knocks and scrapes than Taping and Jointing (see below)

Bonding / Hard wall: Used for plastering over brick and block work and filling holes and large gaps to get a level surface before the skimming is carried out.

Plasterboard / Dry Lining: Tacking is the fixing of plasterboard onto wooden or metal studs and joists. Dot and Dabbing is fixing the plasterboard to brick or blockwork using a special adhesive.

Taping and Jointing: An alternative to plaster skimming, this is usually cheaper for big runs of work. Although it is not as tough as a plastered wall, you can complete the job quicker and with less manpower.  Most new homes are built using this method.

Stud Work: The use of wood or metal to form walls ready for plaster boarding and them skimming.

Artex: The use of a plaster like substance to create textured patterns usually found on ceilings and sometimes walls.

Coving: The use of a moulding to put around the edge of a room where the wall meets the ceiling.

Common works carried out:

I can remove your old ceiling completely and install new plasterboard in preparation for plastering. Alternatively, I can overboard directly over your existing ceiling. This method involves less time and mess. It can increase the sound proofing qualities and insulation values of your room and more importantly, provide better safety from fire. If you are looking to change your textured ceiling to a flat surface then over boarding can be ideal for the majority of cases.

In most cases it is fine to plaster over artex as it provides a good key for
the plaster to adhere to as long as the artex has been properly prepared and
treated with a PVA solution. Unfortunately, even if the artex appears solid, sometimes the weight and wetness of new plaster can pull the artex away from the ceiling causing bubbles to appear. For this reason we would always recommend over boarding the artex ceiling prior to plastering as this way we can guarantee the finish and durability.

We are confident in our level of work, although nothing can compare to being there in person, we hope that these images give a good indication to our work standards.

This is always improving and more photos will be added but this is used as a platform in which we can give you an idea of what we can offer. We’d love to hear from you if you need any work to be done.
